2016 Ford Explorer Changes, Engine

2016 Ford Explorer will come redesigned for this model year. Unlike most of its prior redesigns, its exterior is not the focus. The biggest changes will be made under its hood, so 2016 Explorer will have better performances than before. Explorer still has the same number of seating, as before, without visible dimension change.

Even with camouflage on, we can notice the more rugged appearance of popular SUV. Front end is boxier and bolder, while the headlights are narrower and elongated. Grill is wide-slatted and taillights are redesigned, more angular and with LED technology.

2016 Ford Explorer body panels will be made out of aluminum, which will reduce the overall weight of the SUV. This reduction will have positive impact on both agility and consumption. According to some sources, new Explorer will cut its body mass by 300 pounds approximately.

Same trims are available for this model year, too, and include base Explorer, XLT, Limited and Sport models. Interior will not be changed much. High-class materials and high-level equipment will be offered for all trims, include base.

2016 Ford Explorer will probably keep its standard engine – a 3.5-liter V6, which is found under the hood of previous model. However, it won’t remain unchanged, since Ford will probable upgrade the V6 with boosts for fuel efficiency.  Its power output is 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. 6-speed automatic transmission will most likely come as standard, for all engine line-up while front- and all-wheel drive systems will be available.

The current optional 2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine will probably be replaced with either a 2.7-liter EcoBoost or turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder power unit. 2.7-liter EcoBoost empowers the F-150 and produces 325 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque. 2.3-liter is Mustang’s engine and it is rated at 305 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque.

Both Chevrolet Traverse and Dodge Durango have more space than 2016 Explorer. Chevrolet Suburban and Jeep Cherokee are also part of the category Explorer competes in. Although it might miss out on space, Explorer will, especially with these recent changes, compensate its faults with great performances.
