2015 Ford Explorer Review, price, changes, specs

American automaker made transition from small SUV to comfortable and big crossover, with its Explorer. This model already set its place on the market, and it’s recognizable for its space, practical use and comfort, and, as such, quickly became one of the most popular family vehicles from its category. Its changes for 2015 model year are mostly related to equipment offerings, including new packages as well as expansion of its list of standard features.

Powertrains depend on trims, but, for most of the line-up Ford offered one standard and one optional engine. Sport version is the only version where this is not the case. 3.5-liter V6 engine is standard power unit, and is capable to deliver up to 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. Both front and all-wheel-drive are available, while FWD is standard, models with AWD have slight increase of provided features, and are available with another engine too. Second, optional, engine is a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder that produces 240 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. Sport version has a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine under the hood, with 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, and it is available only with all-wheel-drive. All engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. AWD models with V6 engine have EPA-estimated fuel economy rated at 17/23/19 mpg city/hwy/combined, while, lighter FWD models are rated at 17/24/20 mpg. 2015 Ford Explorers with optional engine are rated at 20/28/23 mpg city/hwy/combined, and Sport model has fuel consumption scores at 16/22/18 mpg.

We already spoke about rough and crowded SUV market, so there is no surprise that Ford’s Explorer will face competitors that are best in class, just like it is itself. Some of its closest rivals include Chevrolet Traverse, Nissan Pathfinder, Dodge Durango, Toyota Highlander, and Honda Pilot, with each one of them has a lot to offer, and a lot to face when confronted to 2015 Explorer.

Pricing starts at $30 600, which is the price tag of the base trim. XLT version starts at $32 900, and Limited is priced at $38 100, and it can go up with optional choices, such as all-wheel-drive ($40 100). 2015 Ford Explorer Sport will cost $42 670. Ford recently published press release with info and specs of the 2015 model, and it should be available for sale soon, if is not available already.
